the mauritius west coast / Tamarin region
Tamarin Bay is situated in Tamarin, next to Black River, on the west coast of Mauritius. Tamarin Bay is very authentic. Early in the mornings, you can meet joggers and dog walkers and in the afternoons people like to come for a relaxed walk along the sea. On week-ends, the beach stays fairly empty until about noon, when it starts to fill up. Families love to come enjoy the afternoon there.
It is a fun beach too, as waves comes straight to the beach. So don't forget to bring boards along. It has two nice surfing spots.
Dolphins are often found close to Tamarin Bay and various boat companies offer trips to watch and swim with them in the mornings.
As it is at the mouth of 'La Rivière du Rempart', during rainy season, Tamarin Bay is separated in two parts, due to the river. “La Passe” created by this river is not difficult to cross if you are not scared to get yourself a bit wet. At low tide it can go from ankle high to hip high, and at high tide it goes from knee high to deeper where you would have to swim through it to reach the other side. In winter, it is often all dried out.
On its left side, towered by “La Tourelle” mountain, there is some protection from the sun from the Casuarina trees. The waves are not as strong near the beach and the water not too deep. On its right side, the beach is wider, the sea deeper, and waves are more fun, however there isn't much protection from the sun.
As it is on the west coast, Tamarin Bay offers the most glorious sunsets. Ideal for sun-downers on a warm day!
Black River is the third largest district of Mauritius in area, but the smallest in terms of population. Located on the western side of the island, it is famous for areas such as Tamarin Falls and Chamarel coloured earth and it contains much of Mauritius' unique tropical forests, including those found in the Black River Gorge.
During winter, deer hunting is practised in the forests. The popularity of the west coast of Mauritius owes a great deal to its dramatic scenery and sunsets, and its proximity to the plateau towns. It is also the driest and sunniest part of the island, which is known for its deep-sea fishing potential, superb beaches and excellent scuba diving.
Several fishing villages have been progressively converted to tourist areas, e.g. Tamarin, Flic en Flac and Le Morne. Tamarin is the only area where surfing is possible during the winter months of June to August.
Flic en Flac is the longest beach on the island and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful ones. The number of bars, restaurants and affordable places to stay makes Flic en Flac a popular destination for independent tourists and a lively place to lunch and enjoy the twinkling lights of evening.
Le Morne, which means 'the mournful one', has a sad history: during colonial times, runaway slaves used to hide and throw themselves off Le Morne Mountain when they were to be caught. When the conditions are right, surfers also take advantage of the natural splendour and good breaks at the northern end of the peninsula, and the waters off the promontory are increasingly popular with kite surfers.

"Very nice place to stay with scenic views of Rempart which reminded us of the Matterhorn , barachois, and the sea. The water was really nice to swim and so clear you could sea few fish around your legs. A lot of activities are accessible but make sure you book in advance from Flic en Flac where there is a few agents with good prices. Surfing there is a must. Very quiet area where you will easily find a big spot on the beach for your towel. Security also seems very good with the people being extremely polite and sociable." Hemal, United Kingdom. August 2014.
Franck, Jamaica. Mai 2014.
"Tamarin Villas is just the respite we need to charge our batteries. It has the peacefulness we need and if we ever need to liven things up a bit, well the city centre is only minutes away. Best of both worlds really!" Stephanie, United Kingdom. January 2014.
