the mauritius west coast / flic en flac region
Flic en Flac is a seaside village on the western part of the island of Mauritius in the district of Black River. Its public white sandy beach is one of the longest and nicest on the island, its lagoon is protected by the surrounding coral reefs, the beach provide spectacular views over the Indian Ocean horizon and of Le Morne Brabant Peninsula located in the south west of Mauritius. Flic en Flac is also home to some of the most luxury hotels in Mauritius, the Tamarin beach is situated a few kilometres away.
Black River is the third largest district of Mauritius in area, but the smallest in terms of population. Located on the western side of the island, it is famous for areas such as Tamarin Falls and Chamarel coloured earth and it contains much of Mauritius' unique tropical forests, including those found in the Black River Gorge.
During winter, deer hunting is practised in the forests. The popularity of the west coast of Mauritius owes a great deal to its dramatic scenery and sunsets, and its proximity to the plateau towns. It is also the driest and sunniest part of the island, which is known for its deep-sea fishing potential, superb beaches and excellent scuba diving.
Several fishing villages have been progressively converted to tourist areas, e.g. Tamarin, Flic en Flac and Le Morne. Tamarin is the only area where surfing is possible during the winter months of June to August.
Flic en Flac is the longest beach on the island and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful ones. The number of bars, restaurants and affordable places to stay makes Flic en Flac a popular destination for independent tourists and a lively place to lunch and enjoy the twinkling lights of evening.
Le Morne, which means 'the mournful one', has a sad history: during colonial times, runaway slaves used to hide and throw themselves off Le Morne Mountain when they were to be caught. When the conditions are right, surfers also take advantage of the natural splendour and good breaks at the northern end of the peninsula, and the waters off the promontory are increasingly popular with kite surfers.

"We spend a great 3 days in Flic en Flac. Apartment was nice and well-equipped. Washing machine work well :). Location was pretty good. A short walk to the nearest supermarket and amazing white sandy beach was directly across the street. There was a swimming pool and 2 jacuzzi in the yard. Value for money was just perfect! Everything worked well and our host Krishna responded promptly to inquiries. Thanks Krishna!" Lasse, Finland. April 2014.
"Chilled out quiet place across the road from the beach and more importantly food snacks. The guys on the gate are friendly, pool and rooms are clean and good value. 10 min walk into Flic en Flac proper which is good on a weekend as it's quieter on this stretch of beach. You can pick the days you'd like your room cleaned." Matthew, UK. March 2014.
"It was a well situated apartment with the beach across the road and many cafés and restaurants in the area and within walking distance.the beach is very long and pretty safe for those who like long walks or even jogging. From the beach you can admire the beautiful scenery of the south west with the black river mountain range stretching out to the sea." John, Canada. February 2014.
